Financial news round-up, August 2022

Posted on 12 September 2022

Here’s a round-up of the financial news and investment stories that caught our eye this month including trouble in the buy-to-let market; investors doubling down on crypto; auction records shattered; and a red-hot superyacht looking for a buyer…

Is buy-to-let a worthwhile investment in 2022?

Buy-to-let properties used to be popular investments in the UK. But with rising costs and regulatory changes prompting many landlords to take their properties off the rental market, are those days numbered? And with housing stock unable to keep up with demand, where does that leave tenants?

Investors undeterred by crypto crash

May’s global cryptocurrency crash hit small-scale investors heavily; on 29 August, The Guardian reported that a teacher lost more than a quarter of a million pounds in life savings. But as this article in Forbes suggests, that’s not deterring some investors.

Sports memorabilia record shattered

A baseball fan with deep pockets shattered sporting memorabilia records this month, splashing out £10.8m on a 70-year-old Mickey Mantle Topps card. That eclipsed the £7.1m paid for Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ football shirt in May, and it suggests sporting collectables are a worthy investment. Maybe it’s time to dust off that box of match-day programmes and Top Trump cards?

Retro tech riches

An unopened first-generation iPhone was auctioned for a staggering $35,414 earlier this month. When it launched 15 years ago, the Apple device set the standard for touchscreen smartphones, which have become a vital part of our everyday lives. But looking at the original model’s spec, you can see just how far our tech has come in a short space of time — it had no front camera, flashlight, or video recording capabilities. The buyer was clearly paying for the item’s cultural significance, rather than its functionality.

The $100m yacht that’s inspired by a volcano

Got $100m burning a hole in your pocket like molten lava? You could use it to buy a slick black and orange super yacht that’s inspired by a volcano. The 80m vessel has been conceptualised by boat designer Anthony Glassman, whose plans feature a swimming pool, an on-board health club and a dedicated VR space.
